An early programme team from 1964 Bath Hospital Radio was formed in 1964 in a basement near the River Avon. Just one programme was made each week on tape, playing the songs of the time. By the late 1960's, we found a new home in the City centre to avoid regular flooding. The move gave us the opportunity to update our equipment. Later, in 1974, after a lot of renovation work, a second studio was opened, with a new record library opening a few years later. It was at this time that live programmes were introduced.
Within a few years, programme times were extended and live programmes were broadcast every evening and new shows introduced on Saturday and Sunday. Then, in the mid-1980's, both studios were completely updated with the proceeds of a massive fund-raising effort.
In 1989, we moved to new premises at the Royal United Hospital. All equipment and more than 2000 records and tapes were moved and on 1st April 1989 the new studio went on air. Since 1989 a programme of continual improvement has brought extended hours and studio modernisation.
Towards the end of 1999, the radio station installed a new, state of the art, "music on hard disk" computer system, providing a high quality sound and a wide variety of music for patients in the two hospitals.
On 1st January 2000, Bath Hospital Radio moved into the new Millennium by significantly enhancing its service. It now broadcasts 24 hours a day, everyday, playing great music, news and informations for patients.
In 2002, Bath Hospital Radio became the national Hospital Radio Station Of The Year.
Bath Hospital Radio celebrated it's best ever year of fundraising in 2004. A number of events, including an auction of promises, and a grant application helped to raise the £20000 needed to rebuild both studios with modern equipment.
It was summer 2006 when the radio station broadcast to the RUH in stereo for the first time after being connected to Patientline. This system provides patients with sophisticated bedside entertainment terminals on which radio is provided free of charge, in digital quality.
Throughout the history of the radio station, one thing has remained at it's heart. That is the aim to provide a special service, playing favourite music and messages from family and friends.
